Las Nubes's Story
La Finca Las Nubes is a Regenified-certified farm owned by Roberto Mata with his grandson, Erick Mata, that grows, washes, dries, and peels their own coffee beans in central Costa Rica, in the region of Los Santos just south of the capital city of San José. Growing a variety of vegetation among the coffee plants like banana and poro trees, forbs, and grasses, Roberto is guided by the knowledge and experience of several past generations of farmers in his family, embracing regenerative agricultural practices, working to keep soil covered and secured throughout the year and provide more shade to the coffee bean plants. In addition to these practices, as Las Nubes does everything by hand, there is little to no soil erosion, greater water and carbon dioxide absorption into the soil, and higher quality coffee beans grown and ultimately selected for your cup of specialty coffee.

Sol Colibri's Story
Arturo Segura’s Finca Sol Colibrí, nestled in the gorgeous area of Santa María de Dota, Costa Rica, epitomizes the profound impact of regenerative agriculture. For over two decades, Arturo has been a pioneer in organic coffee farming, and his farm is distinguished as the only USDA- and EU-certified organic coffee operation in the area. Despite the challenges and costs associated with maintaining such certifications, Arturo’s commitment to organic principles remains steadfast.
This year, instead of renewing his USDA certification, Arturo opted for a comprehensive soil analysis by UCR University to validate the efficacy of his organic practices. This decision was driven by a desire to deepen his understanding of soil health and the effectiveness of his regenerative methods. The results were telling: Finca Sol Colibrí’s soil analysis came back clean and clear of any agrochemical use! Additionally, after 65 exhaustive tests, the farm was awarded the Regenified Tier 5 certification, the highest level of recognition for regenerative practices. This accolade underscores Sol Colibrí’s exemplary efforts in enhancing soil health, restoring ecosystem functions, and promoting biodiversity.
Regenerative Practices at Finca Sol Colibrí
Arturo’s approach to regenerative agriculture goes beyond traditional organic methods, focusing on several key practices:
Enriching Soil Fertility: By incorporating a diverse array of native trees and ground cover plants, the farm fosters robust soil health. These plants support nutrient recycling, enhance soil structure, and boost organic matter, which helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients more effectively.
Promoting Ecological Diversity: At Finca Sol Colibrí, ecological diversity is a cornerstone of resilience. The farm integrates a wide variety of plant species, creating a dynamic habitat for beneficial insects, bees, birds, and other wildlife. This biodiversity not only supports natural pest management but also strengthens the overall ecosystem, making it more adaptable to changes and challenges.
Building Climate Resilience: Arturo’s regenerative practices strengthen the farm’s ability to withstand climate fluctuations. By eliminating reliance on synthetic inputs and focusing on ecological balance, Finca Sol Colibrí develops resilience against weather fluctuations and diseases. The diverse plant cover and improved soil health act as a buffer, helping the farm adapt to environmental stressors.
These principles guide the farm’s commitment to sustainability and regeneration, reflecting a deep respect for the land and a dedication to creating a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem. Additionally, the varied plant species help restore and maintain ecological balance, enabling the land to better absorb rainfall and sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Looking ahead, Arturo plans to resume USDA, EU organic, and Regenified certification in 2025, reinforcing his commitment to both organic and regenerative practices. His written plan of action will outline continued improvements, aiming to further reduce inputs and enhance the farm’s resilience.
Every visit to Finca Sol Colibrí is a source of inspiration. Arturo’s passion for his work and deep connection to the land are palpable. You can enjoy a few videos on our website, telling his story. His dedication to regenerative agriculture not only benefits the environment but is also reflected in the exceptional quality of his coffee. We invite you to join us in celebrating Arturo’s remarkable achievements and experience the quality and taste of his honey-processed coffee.

Sol Naciente's Story
La Finca Sol Naciente was established in 2015 by Arturo Bonilla and Xinia Martínez, now receiving additional help from their son. Using sustainable agriculture practices, Sol Naciente maintains six productive lots of coffee bean cultivation, dense with a variety of trees, as well as a conservation area. This environmental care and high amount of varied vegetation results in elevated levels of living soil cover, reducing soil erosion and improving the soil’s water and carbon dioxide retention. These resulting lower levels of stress on the coffee bean plants help lead to the high quality of coffee Sol Naciente produces.

La Bella's Story
La Finca La Bella, owned by brothers, Heriberto, Steven, and Arturo Marin, is a testament to a rich coffee legacy that spans five generations, beginning with their great-grandfather. Over time, the family land was divided among his 10 children, La Bella remaining with these three brothers. Unfortunately, current low pay in the coffee industry has deterred the fifth generation from joining in the farm’s operations. Launching our Kiss The Ground initiative, we aim to create a sustainable plan to encourage the fifth generation to return and collaborate with their fathers. La Bella’s relationship with regenerative agriculture can be seen in the eyes of Heriberto as he talks about his love of life, creating a productive natural area with La Bella that deeply promotes biodiversity and a strong, healthy ecosystem.
